Gallas is gone, now find us a replacement, Arsene!

By Avenell Dave

Can you remember many Arsenal players who have signed a new contract in the summer after their has expired?

I can only think of one.

Dennis Bergkamp should have been given longer deals, he ended up training on his own in Holland at one stage because he was messed around by the club where he had spent the best part of his career.

We still laud DB10 to this day because even when his legs slowed down, his brain and vision allowed him to cut defences open and pull players out of position.

That William Gallas was given the number ten shirt was crazy - and while he has had many a fine game for Arsenal, he has also let us down way too often.

Kolo Toure may not have been the player we came to love after that bout of malaria at the ACN a few years back, but he was and could have been an icon for the club.

Clearly more marketable than Gallas, his rift with the former captain certainly played a part in his departure and there's no doubt Gallas has been divisive at times.

On top of that, he misses the last few weeks of every season and he can't play with Thomas Vermaelen - they simply aren't the right mix.

I was astounded yesteray to see Gallas admit that he was certain to be fit for the World Cup - if ever there was a hint that he's thinking of the summer and not of his current employer, this is it.

The World Cup odds suggest that France aren't going to win the trophy in South Africa so Gallas can have a nice run out, get a rest before the new season at PSG or wherever he ends up.

I just don't get the feeling that Arsene Wenger is that bothered about keeping him and I don't blame him.

It's dangerous to assume that we've got third place secured but maybe, with the Championship season over, this is a chance to give Kyle Bartley a Premier League start (assuming the PL allows him to play for us now his Sheffield United season is over).

Subotic, Sakho, Cahill and Hangeland have been mentioned as possible replacements for Gallas - and who knows where Wenger will find his new defensive giant.

One thing is for sure: Vermaelen is a guaranteed starter and Gallas and he don't work.

Au revoir Willie - time to move on.
