Time to step up, Gunners!

By Avenell Dave

Was last Wednesday's victory over Liverpool simply papering over the cracks or proof that this Arsenal team has guts and ability?

We'll find out tonight I guess, when we take on the much heralded Hulk and his Porto team who lifted the trophy under the 'Special One' (haha) a few years ago.

Given the injury list, I fully expected Arsene Wenger to make excuses in his pre-match press conference, citing how young and raw this team is.

When I saw that he had praised Porto and said that they could win the Champions League again, I feared the worst.

But credit where credit is due, Le Boss admitted that there will be no excuses if we lose tonight.

Given the absence of Alex Song, William Gallas, Eduardo and Andrey Arshavin, it would be easier to make excuses.

But if Wenger believes in the squad he has, regardless of the doubts many of us Addicts have, then he has to believe they can get something tonight.

And more importantly, they have to believe that they can do it as well.

I really hope that Fabianski has a stormer. He's been disappointing in the FA Cup against the Ch*vs last season and Stoke this year but hopefully taht's just nerves and he can show tonight that Manuel Almunia will never play for Arsenal again.

One decent save against Liverpool should not hide the fact that the Spaniard is not worthy of being an Arsenal goalkeeper.

With big Sol coming into the back four, I'm not too worried, but Abou Diaby needs to carry on where he left off against the Scousers and really dominate the game.

Too often he seems half asleep, which is all the more frustrating when you see what he can do when he puts his mind to it.

With Alex Song out, I'd give thye defensive role to Manu Eboue, if he can be disciplined enough to fulfil his responsibilities.

Up front, it's got to be the midget wingers Rosicky and Nasri with Nick B leading the line and hopefully getting back on the goal trail.

As long as we score, it's not a disaster losing by the odd goal but coming back without a goal to our name, even a 0-0, would be very difficult. Clean sheets are not a speciality of this Arsenal team.
