Should Arsenal sign Joe Cole?

By Avenell Dave

Not another crock I hear you say.

Well, that’s as maybe, but I’d be surprised if Joe Cole is at Stamford Bridge next season.

He’s out of contract in the summer and not signed a new deal and it’s rare that the Ch*vs let their star players get so close to the end of their deals before signing them up.

For those of you who don’t know, Cole was injured for much of last season and has forced his way back into the team this year without hitting the great heights he has done in the past.

He was brought up in North London and I think I’m correct in saying he was an Arsenal fan as a kid, not that that matters thesedays.

At 28, he’s at his peak and maybe needs a fresh challenge and while his wages will be high, I believe he could do a great job for us for three or four years.

He’s Arséne Wenger’s type of player as well – the sort of ball master who likes to weave his way past opponents and perhaps doesn’t enjoy the sometime constrained game Carlo Ancelotti favours (Saturday notwithstanding).

The fact is, Tomas Rosicky and Samir Nasri have both suffered with injuries and Theo Walcott has hardly played a full game since his return, which says it all about our problems.

Maybe Cole’s record in the last year suggests he too would be a crock but I don’t think so.

And what we need if we’re really to push on is some experience to guide the youngster along.

And if we can sign him up to a pre-contract agreement, why not give him a decent deal as we did with Sol Campbell?

Of course, the most important thing to do right now is sign a striker and I’m very concerned that we’ve left it so long without identifying and snapping someone up.

It could be the difference between glory and grief this season and I really hope Wenger is bluffing when he says he has no one in mind.

That said, with games coming thick and fast, it must be difficult for Wenger to dientify quality targets at the right price while still maintaining our challenge for the title.

I’d even be happy to swap Saha and Senderos which might suit all parties (and Saha could play in the CL) just to give us an extra body in there.

Only 14 days left of the transfer market, Addicts, then we have to go with what we’ve got.

Keep believing.
