Arsenal kicked off the season in style on Saturday with a 6-1 thrashing away to Everton. As optimistic as I was feeling before the game, I never thought we’d see a scoreline anything like that. Let’s just hope we can do something even approaching a similar scoreline in Glasgow tomorrow night.
As poor as Everton were, Arsenal’s youngsters put in a fantastic performance. Thomas Vermaelen notched a goal on his debut and Eduardo - my favourite player, in case you are in any doubt - kept up his magnificent goalscoring record for the Gunners.
It was Dudu’s first Premier League appearance since he broke his leg away to Birmingham last 18 months ago, so to see him get on the scoresheet was fantastic. Last season his record was three goals in four appearances. In his first season he totalled 12 goals in 31 appearances. That’s a total of 16 so far for Arsenal and bearing in mind he’s only been on the pitch at the kick off in 24 games, his record speaks for itself and I’m sure we’ll begin to see the best of our Crozilian hitman during the course of this season.
As usual, I digress.
Nicklas Bendtner throughout pre-season has looked like out most improved player and while he still has to convince some of us Gooners that he’s got it, he again looked sharp on Saturday, doing most of the work to set up Denilson’s opener.
And what a strike that was. Indeed, Denilson was outstanding against the Toffees and easily gets my nomination for Man Of The Match, although his midfield partner Alex Song also hit the ground running.
AndreyArshavin gave us another glimpse of his genius and Cesc Fabregas grabbed a brace, whihc isn’t shabby seeing as he only scored three goals in the whole of last season.
All in all I can’t fault anyone who was wearing red and white at Goodison and even though David Moyes’s team were abysmal, surely the Arsenal critics must be revising their early assessments of the prospects for Les Rouges challenging for honours over the next nine months.
Anyhoo, our first big test of the season comes in the shape of a trip to Parkhead tomorrow, but ahead of that nail-biter let’s find out who the first Addict Man of the Match is this campaign. Click on the ‘read more’ link below to access our poll and get voting...
