So what happened to retaining the squad, Arséne?

By Avenell Dave

Every Gooner I speak to keeps pleading with me to reassure them that Arséne Wenger will be making more signings this summer.

When the transfer window opened, do you remember what Le Boss said about his priorities for the summer?

"We lost Hleb and Flamini last summer and we have had to rebuild," said Wenger. "But we have done that now and the future looks bright. We don't want to have to rebuild again, so I want to keep all the players together for next season. I don't want to lose anyone. I want to add to the squad and have identified one or two targets. But identifying players and buying them are two different things.''

So I have to ask, what happened to that resolution?

We have now sold two of our senior players with Manu Eboue also appearing to wave goodbye to the fans after yesterday's match against Hannover.

While they may not have hit the heights of former seasons, the simple fact is that whatever the reasons behind their departures, we now have to rebuild again, just what Wenger was keen to avoid.

Before anyone left, we needed a defensive midfielder at the very least, and that yawning gap continues to stare back at us. Will Patrick Vieira be enough?

Addict reported a few months ago that his return would be fantastic for the youngsters, but if he is the sum of our recruitment, especially with his injuries, there will be questions about where the money has all gone.

A central defensive line-up of Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas may well be the asnswer to our shaky defence of last season – even though they will need time to get used to each other.

Johann Djourou, despite his occasional lapses, is also a worthy substitute.

But with Kolo Toure leaving for the riches of Man Citeh, if we have the injuries we have encountered in previous seasons, are Mikael Silvestre, Alex Song and Phil Senderos, who is also unsettled, good enough to cope? Doesn’t sound too reassuring, does it?

Wenger said earlier this week that he is monitoring potential buys, and now everyone assumes that he has money to spend after the sales of Ade and Kolo.

He said: “I am more focused on getting everybody fit for the start of the season but we are looking at opportunities as well, there are still some pre-season games to see what we really need. When the time comes we will do something."

I have every faith in Wenger, but does he really need time to see where we are short? Everyone knows we need a defensive midfielder, a new centre back if Senderos goes and probably a forward as well.

I never stop admiring Wenger, but last season, his failure to buy Xabi Alonso cost the club dearly – and it was only the matter of a couple of million. Who knows what we would have done if he had signed and now he is worth so much that Real are planning on spending three times what we baulked at last summer.

So come on Arséne, give us all a lift and sign a couple of quality players - at their peak or near enough - to give us real belief that we can compete and not just survive in the season ahead.
