I, like many other Gooners, take pride in the youth of our team.
They are consistently improving (Alex Song, Denilson) and growing all the time (Kieran Gibbs).
But how many of our young stars are going to really make it – who will be taken to the pre season training camp – who will feature in Emirates cup games?
These are questions that only time will answer but having seen a few in action I believe we have some great youngsters coming through.
Fran Merida, Henri Lansbury, Mark Randall (who I believe is pants) and Amaury Bischoff are on the fringes of the first team as is Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey but can we afford to blood them in the first team bearing in mind the players around them are hardly senior?
Kolo Toure had Sol Campbell, Jose Antonio Reyes had Thierry Henry/Dennis Bergkamp, Ashley Cole had Silvinho.....
We are in the final of the FA Youth Cup tonight and of that team we have some powerful players who could do a job for us.
Kyle Bartley is 6ft 5, dominant in the air and composed on the ground. Arsenal need a commanding central defender, right?
Jay Emmanuel Thomas .. powerhouse midfielder ... Arsenal need some size, right?
Francis Coquelin ... tackles like a mad man but nearly always wins the ball and gets forward brilliantly....Arsenal need a holding midfielder, right?
These players as well as the likes of Emmanuel Frimpong and Luke Ayling have bright futures.
But when the likes of Carlos Vela, who is a naturally left footed player, gets dropped to play Abou Diaby in at left midfield where he is nearly always appalling, what chance do our young understudies have?
Diaby has been consistently sh*te this season, making more mistakes in a game than PV4 made in his entire career – I think he’s be a lot better if he had a solid run in the middle but that ain't gonna happen now.
How do you blood these kids and get the balance right? Are our kids that good?
Chelsea have no decent youth players coming through and although Man U have Jonny Evans, how many decent English kids have they got? Bugger all!
That’s because they are in the business of now not the future. Ferguson buys ready-made first teamers like Anderson and Nani (£30million the pair) and if anyone makes it through the ranks like Evans then bonus but Fergie ain't gonna bank on it.
Wenger has sold us a vision of the future and that future is youth ... the only place he has gone wrong is getting the balance right and I think he realises it this season.
There is no doubt Arsene is a genius. He has managed to keep us competitive on a shoe string budget by believing in youth, but sometimes his selections are truly confusing.
Whether he has the funds to do anything about it some wise old heads to hold the kids' hands remains to be seen.
