After Saturday’s comprehensive performance, I’m in two minds about how Arsenal should line up this evening.
One thing is key – we must score an away goal at all costs. I would rather come home 1-1 than 0-0 and trying to attack is central to Arséne Wenger’s philosophy anyway.
I don’t think Saturday’s result, delightful as it was, is much of a benchmark given City’s horrible away record this season.
But even so, with Wenger prone to playing 4-5-1 in Europe, I wouldn’t be completely surprised to see us start with the same formation at Villareal.
Cesc Fabregas had the freedom of North London on Saturday but he still has a way to go before he is fully fit and I’d be quite happy, in Robin van Persie’s absence, to see him play just behind Manu Adebayor.
Thankfully Theo Walcott is fit again – although there are still question marks about his ability to repel physical challenges without getting injured.
With Andrey Arshavin ineligible, I can seethe side lining up exactly the same as it did on Saturday, with Samir Nasri returning on the left.
Part of me thinks we should play two strikers to ensure Adebayor has someone to pass to, but I'm not convinced Wenger will think the same - and anyway, Nic Bendtner, for all his misses and misdemeanours on Saturday, does cause problems when he comes on as a sub.
With our old friend Pascal Cygan at the heart of Villareal’s defence, I’d like to think there may be a few chinks in the home side’s armour – although Marcos Senna’s return is unfortunate.
