Play Fantasy Arséne Wenger: Pick your Arsenal 11 to play at Middle Eastlands

By Avenell Dave

If you believe most Addicts who have commented on the recent trials and tribulations haunting our club, it’s fair to say no one expects us to win this evening at the City of Manchester Stadium.

While Mark Hughes is under pressure after a huge summer spending spree, the fact that he is likely to field his first choice line-up underlines the fact that trophies are trophies are trophies.

The Carling Cup may be the least important silverware available to us but to go to Wembley and win HAS to be a priority for Arséne Wenger now and the fact that he thinks otherwise suggests he is not thinking of the fans when making his priorities.

It’s all very well wanting to preserve players for the Premier League but the title is a long way away now and there are three cups to go for, three cups we can win.

Anyway, back in the real world, I doubt many from Sunday will play tonight, although Carlos Vela may get a chance to show what he can do in a full 90 minutes and Armand Traore could probably do with the game time as well.

I’m particularly looking forward to seeing Craig Eastmond if he plays, who looked so impressive against Liverpool in the last round. He could be the tall rangy midfielder we are lacking, but then again, he’s going to have quite a battle on his hands whether Stephen Ireland, Gareth Barry or Nigel de Jong start for the home side.

It’s also a chance for Lukasz Fabianski to show what he can do – and give us another chance to assess whether he can step up and challenge the dumb waiter, Manuel Almunia, who has no place in top flight football.

So, anything less than a complete hammering (and a Grabeyb*yor goal) would be nice – but you never know, we may just surprise everyone.
