Arsenal travel to the Ukraine today minus Samir Nasri who has not recovered from an injury sustained while on international duty with France last week.
Nasri was rested by Les Bleus after complaining of pain in his knee, but that is now manifesting itself as an ankle injury, so I’m at a loss as to blame the French or if he picked up the knock on his return to London.
While his fellow countryman remains on the physio bench at London Colney, however, Gael Clichy has been declared fit and available for the trip to Kiev after picking up a knock in the weekend hammering of Blackburn.
That only leaves Tomas Rosicky, Eduardo, Mikael Silvestre and Abou Diaby sidelined and Le Gaffer today named his 18 man squad as the Gunners flew east for the Champions League opener.
Carlos Vela also returns to the first team squad after losing out to Kieran Gibbs for the Blackburn game at the weekend, although that was more to do with the Mexican’s late return from international duty than anything else.
Le Boss has stated that although a win would be the ideal start to this season’s Champions League campaign, he will be content with a draw in Kiev.
“It is a tough place for us to go,” said Wenger. “We’ll go there and try to win the game but even if we take a point then for me it will be a good start."
The squad that flew out of London to the game today includes: Manuel Alumunia, Bacary Sagna, Cesc Fabregas, Kolo Toure, William Gallas, Robin Van Persie, Carlos Vela, Theo Walcott, Denilson, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Song, Jack Wilshere, Johan Djourou, Lukasz Fabianski, G ael Clichy, Emmanuel Adebayor, Nicklas Bendtner and Emmanuel Eboue.
