12 hours to go: Are Arsenal planning a last minute transfer swoop?

As if you needed reminding, it’s deadline day and I’m sure I’m as anxious as every other Gooner to see if Arsene Wenger will make one of his infamous last minute buys to strengthen the Arsenal squad.

I’m confident the manager will be working his socks off to bring one or more new faces to Emirates Stadium by the end of the day, but I’m also conscious of the international break which could slightly complicate the task of getting certain signatures on contracts.

In years gone by Le Gaffer has sewn up 11th hour deals which were so off the radar that there was barely a tabloid page filler mentioning the player names – and we all know how the red-tops like to run with rumours that player X is joining the club, so that they can print an “As we told you exclusively two months ago” story.

But this year things are a little different. In previous seasons Le Boss has sometimes said he is happy with his squad and won’t be making any more deals, only to pull something out of the bag just second before the transfer window slams shut for four months. This year he’s been saying he’d like, ideally, to sign at least one more player, but as for a hint at whom he might be thinking of – well, no chance.

Yesterday saw some speculation that Patrick Vieira might be set to rejoin the Gunners, but I just can’t see Arsene ever bringing back a player who he thought was surplus to requirements three years ago. if I'm proved wrong though, I'll be very happy indeed.

We’ll endeavour to bring you any transfer news as and when the club confirm anything. Until then, feel free to use the comments section to discuss any rumours you hear, or the obligatory, “My mate just saw Gennaro Gattuso at Highbury House” gossip.
