A couple of people have commented to me that Arsenal were lucky in our victory over Chelsea yesterday. Well I don't know what they were watching, but I'm going to refer to Arsene Wenger and his love of statistics:
Arsenal had 52% of the possession and the Gunners had seven shots on target compared to Chelsea's two. And apart from Johan Djourou's own goal, Almunia was never seriously tested, whereas Petr Cech was kept pretty busy by the Arsenal team.
So RvP scored from an offside goal. Big deal. It happens. And it'll happen against Arsenal on more than one occasion this season. But forgive me if I'm wrong - don't you have to score goals to win a game?! Chelsea failed, Arsenal did not. Job done, the better team won.
As for our Man of the Match poll, well I reckon the flying Dutchman is a shoe-in, but I think Cesc Fabregas had a fantastic game, as did former skipper William Gallas and Gael Clichy, who Chelsea just could not handle at times. And I have to say that Djourou did not let his head drop despite the error that gave the home side the lead.
Robin van Persie looked at the top of his game and if he can continue to improve on that form perhaps we'll finally see him fulfil the promise that we all know he's capable of.
But with Chavski as another major scalp for Arsene Wenger's men, surely Le Gaffer can now build the belief that his team can beat anyone and start to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League crown. The odds are 16-1, which is definitely worth a punt.
